In a move that will provide a major boost to the New Zealand film and television industry WIFT NZ (Women in Film and Television) has announced its inaugural mentoring placement under a new International Mentorship Programme for film industry professionals.

The programme, made possible with seed funding from SKYCITY Community Trusts, aims to provide talented New Zealand women working in the industry with extraordinary opportunities to learn from some of the world’s finest filmmakers.

The first person to be awarded a mentoring placement is Auckland-based Kirsty MacDonald, an accomplished documentary and filmmaker, who will work alongside Niki Caro during the filming of The Vintner’s Luck.

Niki Caro is one of New Zealand’s most successful film directors whose two features, Whale Rider and North Country, have each earned Oscar nominations. The Vintner’s Luck is her current project and has just started filming in Auckland before relocation to France and Belgium.

WIFT Executive Director Anne O’Brien says the mentoring programme is an exciting development for WIFT and provides an unparalleled opportunity to provide industry women with exposure at an international level.

“One of the core objectives of WIFT is to provide professional development opportunities for women in the industry and this particular initiative provides an extraordinary opportunity for us to develop the skills and knowledge base of New Zealand practitioners. We feel both excited and very lucky to be launching the programme with a production team of this stature,” Ms O’Brien said.

Ms MacDonald’s placement will commence at the start of European filming.
