Oprah Special on This is the Year to Get Richer

Can our money experts help five unsuspecting audience members get richer – in just one hour? Oprah Special: This Is The Year To Get Richer, screening Friday, May 11th, 2007 at 9:30pm.

According to money expert Jean Chatzky, one of the most common excuses women make for not taking control of their money is “my husband takes care of our finances.” It’s an excuse that’s all too familiar for 48-year-old Kerry.

Kerry was a single mum working two jobs and going to school full-time when she met her husband. About six months before they married, Kerry says her husband-to-be took responsibility for the bills and finances.

Then, her world was completely shattered when she says her husband asked for a divorce without warning. The couple had been in deep debt, and Kerry was left with no money and nothing to call her own.

Financial expert Jean Chatzky comes to the rescue with Kerry, and has four simple steps she says anyone can follow:

Maximize your income; by setting income goals, and working hard for promotions at work.

Spend less than you make; by paying bills on time, thinking before you make expensive purchases and finding extra money for your savings.

Invest money you don’t spend; therefore earning interest and saving money without even knowing it!

Finally, protect your money; by getting insurance and a will.

The queen of talk shows also meets five friends who stopped spending, started a Money Group and made their dreams come true; plus Oprah gives three families one year to get out of crushing debt in the Oprah Special: This Is The Year To Get Richer, screening Friday, May 11th 2007 at 9:30pm.
